CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Lalli Saku Hotakainen.
AGE: 19.
CANON: Stand Still Stay Silent.

CANON HISTORY:
here is his wiki page, but it kinda sucks, SO. Here is my very poor and unfortunately not very serious summary of events.

YEAR 0 - The apocalypse hits in the form of a rash illness, supposedly taking out the majority of the world. It causes a mutation of infected persons and animals, turning them into body horror monsters called trolls, giants, and beasts. Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland survive and create a council while remaining separate countries with vastly different values. Magic sparks up in Finland as they return to the old beliefs, with one of the first mages being Ensi Hotakainen, born this year with uncommon immunity to the illness.
YEAR 71 - Lalli Hotakainen, grandson of Ensi, is born to Jukka and Tuulikki Hotakainen with both immunity and magic abilities. The only two in their small village with both qualities, Ensi takes Lalli out for training while taking care of troll reports around their area.
YEAR 79 - Lalli and his cousins, Onni and Tuuri Hotakainen, move to Keuruu after a so-far-undisclosed incident leaves them as the only remaining members of the Hotakainen family.
YEAR 84 - Lalli has entered the Finnish military as a night scout at some point prior, a job he is alluded to be very good at given his previous training with his grandma. However, after turning in an insufficient scouting report, a group ventures out into that area and are attacked, causing the deaths of four men.

YEAR 90 - Current comic events.
Lalli is hired (unknowingly) to go out and (officially) gather old world information, potentially things related to a cure, and (unofficially) collect books to sell and get rich quick from the Silent World, unpopulated areas overrun with trolls. They meet up with another crew member, Emil Västerström, in Sweden, and the other two, Mikkel Madsen and Sigrun Eide, after a rocky train ride to Denmark. It isn’t long before they are out in the Silent World and on their first venture for books. Emil blows a building up with Lalli still inside and he has to dive out of a second story window. Great bonding experience.
The gang quickly runs out of food and finagles a supply crate from an Icelandic ship, which Reynir Árnason stows away in and starts to ruin everything, especially from Lalli’s perspective because it turns out Reynir is an Icelandic mage with zero experience or immunity and he has no idea how to deal with that. On the bright side, he reveals that he considers Emil to be his friend in a conversation in the dreamscape with his cousin Onni.
Lalli’s abilities are called into question when they run into unexpected bad weather, and in an effort to prove himself, he winds up using too much of his magic and falling asleep from page 403 to page 514. He sleeps through two trolls attacks and a ghost attack, where he is actually targeted. It’s ridiculous, but that’s what happens when you temporarily lose one-third of your soul, I guess. He also has an extremely gay dream about Emil smiling at him and the others praising him like there’s no tomorrow right before he wakes up, and so throws a bit of a silent tantrum when he wakes up for real and they’re all cooing over a kitten instead. He becomes more and more frustrated by the fact that he doesn’t share a language with anyone but Tuuri, who is a poor translator and disregards him a lot, so after a montage he’s learned a very small amount of Swedish.
He heads into a hospital with Sigrun and Mikkel because it’s hinted that information on a cure will be there, but after collecting the information, they have to escape because more ghosts attack. Get used to it. It turns out that the “cure” concocted and found by the crew does work to eradicate the illness, but causes the patient to go braindead soon after. Lalli can’t actually hear that revelation because he only speaks Finnish, but after that story he pokes around the area a little more and discovers that -- surprise -- a ghost army is coming right for them.
An action sequence happens, but the only noteworthy thing from Lalli’s perspective is that he challenges the leader of the ghosts because he dissed his weak magic during their last confrontation, and then Tuuri is attacked by a troll that somehow got inside the tank. Since she isn’t immune, Lalli goes into a depression that the rest of the crew tries to snap him out of because even if his cousin may be dying, they need him to do work so they can get back to the known world and out of the horrible situation they’re in. On a supply run with just the two of them, Emil tries to cheer Lalli up by pointing out that soon they’ll be home and it will be spring, and that even though bad things have happened, it’ll still have been a positive experience because they’ll be friends. Lalli looks at him and says that if their lives had anything in common, Emil wouldn’t be able to smile. After “smile” is the only word Emil understands out of his scathing rant, Lalli cuts off their friendship because he believes they’re too different for it to work, and stomps off to try and make his point in a way the other will understand. He proceeds to sulk, understandably.

CANON PERSONALITY:
A lot of the time, Lalli doesn’t seem like he’s entirely connected to reality. He’s often shown staring blankly off into space in group photos, and even when he’s inspecting something he appears largely unaffected. This disconnection and acceptance leads to a few misunderstandings, most notably his inclusion in the expedition crew sent out into the Silent world, an unexplored and dangerous area, as he assumed his cousin was joking around whenever she mentioned it and so went along purely because he didn’t really understand what she was getting at. Similarly, when he was told that this meant he had a new boss, Lalli assumed that he must have been fired and forgotten about it, having to be corrected and told he resigned. It’s safe to say that outside of his work, he doesn’t put much care into following along. If it concerns him, then someone will make sure he gets the pertinent information, but otherwise he is more than fine with detaching himself and disregarding things when it’s not strictly his business.

This extends to how he deals with people as well. Lalli prefers to isolate himself from most people, working alone whenever possible to the point of abandoning other members of the crew in potentially dangerous situations to do his own exploring and fix the problem. It takes him a while to warm up to others, questioning why he has to be near them and showing reluctance even after being assured that he’ll be able to get along with them, but as shown with his interaction with Emil, he does come around towards accepting them eventually and will interact with them or show a little more emotion around them when he does. Even when he’s not attached, though, Lalli does what he can to protect people in general to minimize damage. Whether this is out of a genuine concern or passively fueled by his need to not have his ability called into question is unclear at times.

He’s good at what he does to the point where it’s really the only thing Lalli takes pride in. A lack of opportunity caused him to lead a sheltered life, and so most of his education has been the informal training in mage ways and just slightly more structured military scout training. Because of this, it isn’t unusual for Lalli to feel lost when placed in an unfamiliar situation, but unless he feels it’s relevant to him, he’ll allow things to go on as they are and remain ignorant, coming up with vague terms to dismiss the unknown. Societal norms and proper conversation, even when there is no language barrier to work around or there’s a family relation, are often ignored because he can get away with not abiding to them -- he even finds it perfectly acceptable for him to steal food from others when he decides he wants it. However, not learning how to deal with people that way has backfired when friendly contact goes over his head or when he’s forced to acknowledge and reciprocate things like greetings, etc. All that staring he does comes in handy, though, as he’s taken to watching people with an unsettling focus. The more comfortable he gets with an individual, the more he can judge their body language with accuracy -- and the more he wants to -- even if the explicit meaning still escapes him.

That doesn’t necessarily help any, though, as Lalli is still very obviously uncomfortable with contact. When seeing his cousin Onni again in a setting he is inherently more communicative in, he still pulls away when it looks like the other is going in for a hug -- having his shoulders grabbed is the only physical action he seems consistently okay with, likely having gotten used to it from being led around or seeing it used as a sign of approval and sympathy. Emil is really the only person he initiates contact with in the “real” world (outside of his dreams), though even that is limited to briefer expressions. When confronted with situations of distress, Lalli becomes more lenient in his detached ways, letting others use him as a sort of safety blanket as it will allow them to process things so everything can go back to normal faster. He is also more tolerant of things in the Dreamscape, possibly because it’s a realm of spirit stuff and so is, by default, more true and naked, although that also leads to truer negative emotions as well. When someone is able to walk freely into his area of safety, Lalli is quick to anger and force him out.

Not only was he secluded by primarily living a nocturnal life for many years, but scouts are very much like cats, seemingly as a whole. It’s hard to say whether the job forms this type of behavior on its own or if that type of personality is chosen as it results in the best workers -- either way, Lalli is no exception, disliking loud noises, remaining aloof, and taking a haughty, overconfident approach to things. This lack of regard extends to his personal wellbeing (not blinking an eye when removing glass shards from his arm) and his appearance, though he subjects himself to others taking care of those things for him, especially if it follows protocol (quickly stripping out of possibly contaminated clothing and allowing Emil to bathe him “properly”, marking maps with notes, etc.) Largely, he prefers to be a passive participant when it comes to his care and keeping.

Active action is reserved for scouting and mage work. While these are often strenuous or -- to be frank -- odd as hell tasks, such as skinning a dog’s diseased flesh away, Lalli puts the proper effort in out of respect, taking a gentle but firm approach. He takes his duties seriously and without complaint (assuming he hasn’t been overworked) both because it’s what’s expected of him and it’s what he’s good at, causing a sense of satisfaction. Lalli gets to be seen as useful and do the right thing! Win-win.

Of course, that leads to a miffed child throwing a tantrum when it comes to having his ability questioned. This becomes exceedingly clear as, over the course of their journey, Lalli gets progressively more tired, doing what is essentially the work of three scouts instead of one. Under the stress of that, and not being allowed to rest up properly, he’s more freely irritated (snapping at others when he’s woken up), reckless (pushing his Luonto/companion spirit to its limit), and forgetful (not taking weather into account when marking out their path). Because he’s the only one to rely on for certain things, he’s also become more conceited, though that kind of inflated viewpoint isn’t anything new, as shown in a flashback where a mistake he made caused the death of four people. While inwardly acknowledging his errors enough to learn from them and resolve to fix things, Lalli has a tendency to shove blame away from himself if he can find an opportunity to do so. When this fails and he has to take the fall, he’ll react by shutting down and purposefully ignoring the situation, especially if he’s being yelled at -- loud noises cause him to cover his ears already, but he reacts worse when these things are directed at him -- until there’s a chance to make things right again and earn back the respect he feels he deserves.

Expiring his Luonto was one of the more foolish actions Lalli takes, and it took quite a toll on him, though he doesn't show any explicit regret over it. In fact, he appears to feel justified in it, despite the mess it played a part in. After recovering that part of his soul, he dreams that the first thing he wakes up to is Emil leaning over him and smiling, which is then followed by everyone (who he can inexplicably understand, thanks dreams) praising him for his skills and hard work -- except for Reynir, who says he's going to cut his stupid braid off, and Kitty, who has crawled into the trash can. This peeling back of the curtain confirms a few silly preferences, but also speaks volumes to the desires he’s been holding back. He doesn't enjoy people or their company typically, but he wants to understand them and be understood in kind. He wants to be left alone without being forgotten. He wants to draw boundaries in the sand and have them be respected because others respect him, not because he's that weird solitary wildling. It's a type of reward in his instant gratification system, and having contact pulled out from under him instead of shoved away is an unexpected, lonely experience that leaves him trying to distance himself from the others (Emil in particular, as not being appreciated by him apparently hurt the most) before he's stubbornly coaxed back into the group. The slap in the face that was discovering his own yearnings, likely mixed with his failings at being an adequate enough mage and scout to protect the crew, makes Lalli redouble his efforts when it comes to the mission. He takes orders without complaint, and even starts to learn some Swedish to help him both professionally and personally. Of course, when things continue to go poorly and he's more personally affected, he backs down from his confident ways even further, determination turning into depression. He returns to limited expressions and minimal speaking even as he situates himself into more of a guard position for those he wants to protect, because even in his bitterness and resignation, he still feels desperate to scrape what he can from the situation.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Mundane abilities - Lalli has a body and mind made for scouting out the area for his expedition team, being agile and having a good enough memory to not need to carry a map with him while he goes out and mentally notes the best routes available to them. He also has good eyesight and hearing in addition to his enhanced spiritual senses.
He has a general knowledge of the forest and the creatures in it, though animals found within the city or other parts of the world, such as horses, are an unexpected mystery to him.
Lalli has a rifle and a knife is capable of using them for combat and other purposes, like skinning animal bones clean.
Poor, highly specific Swedish language skills.

Sixth sense - He is able to detect the presence of spirits (including trolls, the carriers of the disease and primary adversary in canon), although this isn't guaranteed as he is still shown to be unaware of them at times. However, this ability isn't just shown to be in the moment, but also once in the form of a vision predicting the form and breach point of the giant attacking their train. This wasn't seen as anything more than bothersome until just before the impact, where he realized they were in imminent danger.

Dreamscape - When they fall asleep, a mage's mind is sent to the Dreamscape, where they can come in contact with other spirits, either friend or foe. Finnish mages like Lalli are able to defend themselves in their dreams with both offensive magic and with a barrier around their "area", a personal space influenced by them.
He can also control elemental forces to some degree (water and root structures specifically) and has been shown using a spiritually-charged knife and an explosive energy while under attack in the Dreamscape, though his range of control over these particular skills in the waking world is still unclear.

Spells - Although they're called spells, they're really more of a type of prayer. The examples shown of Lalli performing spells are when he pleas with Kuutar to allow the moon to show through the clouds and so make their journey on a train a little bit safer, when he requests/demands spirits leave from the area surrounding them so their radio stops being distorted by their voices, and when he hangs the skull of a dog from a tree and helps guide its spirit to the afterlife.

Luonto - A creature that is the third part of the human soul in the Finnish belief system. Lalli's is represented as a Lynx, and as a mage he can draw strength from it. If it leaves him for some reason, including pushing it to its limits, then Lalli will become weakened and incredibly tired. The concept is detailed more here.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Lalli Saku Hotakainen.
AU AGE: 19, almost 20.
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES:
There aren't many! Lalli is still very skinny from poor eating habits and a high amount of exercise, but it's not quite as extreme due to not living a militant life. Also living in America where our food is horrible and full of sugar. Since he doesn't go around potentially dangerous areas, he has fewer scars. His nails are frequently jagged from being chewed.

AU HISTORY:
When Lalli was eight, he, his mother, and father moved to America to be closer to his grandmother. Being the new, shy kid with the funny accent, poor English, and the impossible name, he didn't have the easiest time integrating into his classroom. He withdrew into himself even more until his parents didn't know what to do anymore and his grandma took it upon herself to get the boy back to “normal”. This involved taking him out to a place where his silence and caution would be appreciated -- the hunting blind. Getting to spend time with his previously scary, equally alien grandma did manage to bolster his spirits enough to get him through elementary and middle school. By then, his English was just fine, but he allowed himself to be brushed off as the weird boy that couldn't understand. He didn't want to hang around with any of his bullies, anyway.

One of the complications he did have was presenting with minor hallucinations, which he claimed were spirits. When combined with behaviors he exhibited due to stress, anxiety, loneliness, and his then-undiagnosed autism, he was misdiagnosed and treated for schizophrenia. The unnecessary medication didn't agree with him, and the extreme reaction caused him to mistrust doctors and hospitals in general.

The summer before high school, Lalli’s parents were planning to move away again, but the mere suggestion made their son become moody and even shut down. After a month of negotiation, it was agreed that he would be allowed to stay with Grandma and the area he was already familiar with as long as he kept in frequent contact. This was proved moot when, a few months later, they were killed in an accident and his custody was officially transferred to his grandmother. He was able to switch to online classes due to consistent “problems in a classroom setting,” including an increase in outbursts triggered by his grief and frustration with the other teens’ “petty complaints”. Sophomore year while out hunting with Grandma, he was hit with a deeper appreciation for nature when he, Disney princess style, came face to face with a pair of deer. After getting some more distance and relaying his experience to his grandmother, Lalli was urged to take down the deer anyway. He did, but that was the year he quit shooting animals and started...shooting animals! This time with a camera. He keeps one of the antlers up on his wall, and the other has been turned into a decorative knife hilt, as a reminder of that day.

Set on the animal photography path and content with school and his (lack of) social life, the passing of his grandma after graduation was unexpected and devastating. He stopped going outside, except for stress-relieving night running and quit his career pursuits. While his lifestyle greatly deteriorated, he's been too bullheaded to seek help or move out of the little shoebox apartment he'd shared with his grandma.

So yeah, that's pretty much what he's been doing for the past year or so. Just staying inside, sleeping, and running at night. Maybe an mmo here and there.

AU PERSONALITY:
The biggest difference in AU Lalli is that he’s swapped his scouting/magic knowledge for a more-than-minimal education. He can do more than reading, writing, and basic math! He knows two languages!

His world also isn't overrun by monsters, so outside of social situations, he's a bit less on edge. He doesn't have a schedule to adhere to or vital responsibilities, so his sleep deprivation is caused by more normal young adult habits instead, and it's more acceptable for him to be a moody teen, so his judgmental nature comes through as more bitter than naive.
