( Well. His mission was somehow successful. Despite the fact that it was humiliating and people ended up knowing he was in that stupid costume, Emil was determined to receive his reward. To take back that stupid suit and make the whole thing worthwhile.
It had been days -- longer than he knew other Naan requests had been, but he'd been told explicitly from the jump: this is a more cumbersome request, so come back in a little while. By now it's been a little while (or at least how long a little while should take based on Emil's impatience). Time to go forth and receive the fruits of his labor.
Emil sets out from Cypress right after he's done eating a meager breakfast. The cold is beginning to lift; the heat causing a foggy mist to form around town at about waist-height. Other patches are a little bit higher. The prickling heat tickles his nose a little, but damn it. He's going to see this thing through. It's not like fog is a foreign concept to the Swedes.
Naan has what he's requested, thank goodness. A few harsh words are thrown at him, and Emil receives some playful taunts back. Whatever; he's got the book and he's going home.
...Except it might be early enough that Lalli's only just slunk back to his tree group. He made a fool out of himself and then had to wait for days to finally receive his item. An excited rush goes through his body knowing he can immediately show off that he did pretty damn good despite...you know.
The knock on Birch 201's door is very excitable and rapid. Sorry if any roommates are present, he's a giddy boy...with a mysteriously itchy forearm, but the long sleeve of his sweater is hiding that warning sign for now. )
[There's a moment where the only sound is a quiet shuffle, and even then that's a deliberate choice for the visitor's sake rather than any carelessness on Lalli's part. Because he definitely wasn't tire. Nope. No siree. He's wide awake and looking at Sarnai's resting form like he's hoping she'll suddenly leap up and answer the door for him, dismiss whoever it was, then let him get back to sleep. When that doesn't seem like that's going to happen, Lalli goes back over, creaks the door open an inch, and squints at this intruder.
Oh. This intruder is fine.
Lalli hums and gives a signal to wait before retreating back into his room and quickly stripping free of his uniform so he can get on some more comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes. His knife still gets tucked into his pocket. Just in case. Satisfied and curious despite his weariness, he nods to himself and steps outside to gently close the door behind him. He doesn't know if Sarnai wears her earrings while she sleeps, but he'd feel bad if she did and he wound up waking her because his friend paid him an early visit. A really early visit...]
Why are you here?
[...hmmn, it vaguely occurs to him that since he said that out loud, he should have tried harder to phrase it in a nice way instead. Alas.]
( His mouth opens and his hand raises when he sees Lalli crack open the door and lift a hand, but it's closed again before he can even get a breath out. Well...okay. He guesses that didn't mean hi, but instead to just. Stay put.
If he's standing there for more than a minute he's going to start knocking again. Thankfully he won't have to stoop to that level of demanding obnoxiousness. Hello friend, your clothes are different than the small peek he'd gotten a second ago. )
Hey! ( That's not an answer, but he'd been holding it in since the door closed. ) I've got something to show you.
( Emil moves to pull the object in question out of his waistband but pauses. ) ...Do you want to go somewhere else?
( Maybe a more appropriate question would be "Did I disturb you?" but he's pretty sure Lalli'd tell him if he did. Or he wouldn't have answered the door. Whatever, it's weird just standing in the hallway. )
[got something to show you and he immediately reaches for his pants wow moving fast and so publicly too -- AHEM.
His head tips and his hand raises again, this time in a belated greeting, because that's something people did when other people said "hey". He's pretty sure. What he's not sure about is this moving business... It would be good to put more distance between himself and the sleeping Sarnai, not to mention find something soft to slump against that isn't Emil's shoulder. Oh, look at that, somehow his hands and forehead have found their way to said shoulder for some good ol' support.]
Mmn. Yes.
[Sound very good, and so he leans his weight a little more against Emil to direct him away from the door. Also so he can try and get a peek at what his friend's got before the big, official reveal...]
( someone may have first written "wrapped package" and then backspaced almost immediately
He may have actually come a little too late in the day to catch Lalli at full attention, but he's seen his friend work on little sleep before. It's not entirely necessary that he immediately pays attention anyway. )
Oh, uh. Alright. ( Emil let's him lean on him initially, not sure if that's what's actually keeping him upright. Are you going to make it buddy...?
Too bad the leaning can't last very long since he's already quickly going down the stairs, rounding the corner to the common area, all the while making sure Lalli isn't going to just shut off. That seemed to happen when he entered sleep mode. )
Sit down or something...? ( He says "or something" because he wouldn't blink if Lalli crawled under the coffee table. )
[Somewhere in the back of his mind, it registers as amusing that Emil is almost treating Lalli like he's the one that's the guest. He really should just move in, like he'd mentioned to that weird Juzo guy... But mostly he's focused on walking up onto the couch and using the arm as his perch. Yes, this is good. He leans forward again, considering Emil.]
Did I do something this time or is it another gift?
[his eyes may or may not be saying gimme gimme gimme in addition to time for bed.]
( An older version of Emil might say something about using the furniture so bizarrely but you get a pass, sleeps. Sometimes responding to Lalli is a masterful art, especially when he's asking weird ass questions. )
Neither...? ( Since it technically isn't a gift and also he...didn't do anything; wow that sure is a common go to with this kid.
But at the same time it's not not a gift? And it wasn't like he was completely uninvolved with why Emil wanted it in the first place... ) Actually, both I guess?
( Whatever, this is distracting from his big "I Did A Good" reveal. He slips the crudely wrapped brown paper off of his surprise after finally revealing it, mysteriously covered in a very large scrawling of his name, and is totally unbothered by just throwing his trash on the floor. Some Birch person can pick it up later.
His excited gesture of shoving it at Lalli doesn't match the sort of puzzled look on his face. Right...he knows Lalli can read, but he also knows it's not like he's a brainiac of some kind. Emil wouldn't have ever wanted to use one of these if they weren't intrinsically tied to his youthful years of academic prowess, and that was just for looking up words in his own language. )
Do you know what this is? ( He says it hurriedly like he's teetering on the edge of a very excitable, long-winded explanation...well, he might give one anyway, even if Lalli is familiar with what a dictionary is. The cover isn't particularly fancy or telling, but Emil also made the mistake of not specifying what origin country he would have liked the dictionary to be from. He's not yet aware of the forward written entirely in Finnish that he can't understand, but at least that means Lalli can read (and hopefully understand) the cover.
It reads Swedish ↔ Finnish | A Pocket Dictionary for Modern Translators. He Did A Good. )
[Neither...? This is starting to get complicated. How is Lalli supposed to get a grasp on normal people things when they constantly changed like this for no apparent reason? He huffs a little, but he's easily distracted by Emil continuing on and...making things more confusing. How is it both if it's neither!! His enthusiasm is a little lacking in the face of Emil's, and he responds,] A book, [before he can stop himself, but he still reaches out so he can examine it more closely. Once it registers, the lynx ears perk up automatically and his eyes widen a little.]
Oh.
[This is...good. This is really good, and he plucks the book away from Emil so he can flip through the pages with a focus that was usually reserved for the first time he set eyes on a map. After some scanning, Lalli looks up, hesitant but still a little proud, as he announces,] Tack.
[FUCK OFF TUURI, HE SAID A SWEDISH THING WITHOUT YOU.]
( That hammering excitement that Emil's barely able to contain intensifies with each new development. Lalli's initial perceived confusion is forgotten when he snatches it, ears perked, flipping through with obvious interest.
Success. He'd take a little bit of a risk since if he's not interested in books, he can only imagine how droll Lalli must find them, but the subject matter makes up for it.
Lalli's said a Swedish word -- emphasis on the a -- before, which had made him smile a little bit, but today he feels aglow. ) See? It's a dictionary that translates stuff for you. I don't know about sentences, but words are a good place to start, right? So we can get the gist of things.
( He doesn't have the dictionary, so he can only confirm in his own language. Emil clears his throat, barely able to be irritated at the effort he has to put in to speak his own language here. )Ingen orsak.
[Lalli nods to relay his understanding as he continues to turn pages, this time going for the reverse. It helps, sort of, to have the context so he feels more like he's confirming the translation rather than learning. Satisfied that he was correct, he folds the book shut and presses it against his chest like it might fly away if given the chance.]
( The excitement leaves his lungs at the remembrance of his dirty deed. He'll never be able to live this down in his mind -- the kind of thing you're suddenly eating a salad or taking a shower, then suddenly remember and die inside all over again. )
They don't, typically. You have to go to a special merchant for it. It took him long enough to get it -- I was a bit dubious at the claims he can get you nearly anything, but he pulled through well enough.
( It's too embarrassing to connect the dots out loud. Whether or not this turns out to have been worth it in the end...he assumes it will be, but time will tell!! )
